Not only is it one of the best-selling video games of all time, but it’s also hailed as one of the best video games ever made. This game sits on top of the Mount Rushmore of games, both for its single-player component and its online multiplayer mode.
Like GTA 5, Grand Theft Auto Online, the online mode of the main game, is also widely beloved by players. It’s home to millions of players and is being played on a wide array of platforms and consoles. In fact, the game has been released on three different generations of consoles.
When a game is available on different consoles and it has an online mode, gamers immediately wonder whether it supports cross-platform. The game itself is widely loved by players, but the answer behind its cross-platform implementation may be a disappointment to some.
GTA Online And Its Lack of Cross-Platform Feature
GTA Online unfortunately doesn’t support cross-platform. It’s not cross-generation either. This means players of the game will only be able to play with other players who are playing on the same console or platform as they are. PlayStation 4 players will only be able to play with other PS4 players. They won’t be able to play with PS3 or PS5 players, and they definitely will not be able to play with Xbox and PC players.
The game is almost a decade old as of 2022, and each time the game is re-released on a newer generation console, it becomes upgraded and improved. Perhaps the changes made to the games with each generation explains its lack of cross-platform feature. Regardless of this possible explanation, fans are disappointed in this limitation all the same.

At this point, it is highly unlikely that cross-platform or cross-generation features will ever be added to GTA Online. As of 2022, Rockstar Games, the studio behind this critically acclaimed title, has put all of its resources into making GTA 5’s successor. Fans definitely have that to look forward to.
Perhaps now, the best thing for GTA Online players to do is to simply wait for GTA 6 and its online mode and hope for it to have the cross-platform feature its predecessor sorely lacks.
