Red Dead Online was released in 2019 as the multiplayer platform for Red Dead Redemption 2. The game received divided reception at first, but after a couple of updates and as new events came along, the game quickly became more beloved by the masses.

Unfortunately for the game and its player base, Rockstar eventually stopped providing support to Red Dead Online. The renowned studio did this so they can allocate all of their resources and manpower into making Grand Theft Auto 6.

Despite this, a handful of players are still playing the game to this day. There are currently three platforms players can play this game on. Red Dead Online is on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. That said, if you were playing on one platform and a friend of yours plays on another, will you be able to play together via a cross-platform feature?

Red Dead Online’s Limitations

Red Dead Online unfortunately doesn’t support cross-platform gaming. This means players playing on PC will only be able to play with others playing on the same platform. The same is true for PlayStation and Xbox players.

Considering the game’s massive world and abundance of things players can experience, the game could have definitely benefited from this feature. More and more online games today have this feature either from the get-go, or later in their lifespans. That’s because fans always call for this feature, and Red Dead Online fans have called for it as well. A lot of players have friends who play on different platforms. The cross-platform feature makes the difference in platforms irrelevant and players are able to play with whoever they want.

There’s also no way for Red Dead Online to receive an update that makes the game support cross-platform. As previously stated, Rockstar has completely stopped supporting the game. However, there may still be a chance in the future for the studio to come back and work on this beloved online game again. Perhaps they can finally add the cross-platform feature to it then.

That said, fans shouldn’t hold their breaths. If Rockstar were to support Red Dead Online again, it will be well after Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out. Even then, it’s highly likely they’ll instead spend their time working on another version of GTA Online that will come with the new Grand Theft Auto game.

Should You Still Play Red Dead Online?

Given the online game’s lack of features, events, support, and player base, It’s not as worthwhile to play Red Dead Online as it was in its first two years. However, if you’re someone who just played Red Dead Redemption 2, you might as well give Red Dead Online a shot.

There’s a lot of things you can still do in the game if you’re a newcomer. You’ll even meet other NPCs who Arthur Morgan met in the base game. You’ll also be able to play with other players online, perhaps some who are also newcomers. That said, don’t expect it to be as occupied as other more popular and developer-supported online titles.

If you’re someone who has played the game quite a bit, then you know how repetitive the tasks can be. At this point, you might be better off playing another online game. The world of gaming has no shortage of games, after all.
